NAS Livermore

Description:
  The Naval Air Station at Livermore, CA was constructed in 1942, commissioned in 1943, and decommissioned in 1946. After a brief period of civilian use, and consideration as the site for the Air Force Academy, the property was developed as a research center. Eventually it became the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

  Following the Navy takeover of Treasure Island, Pan Am relocated their facilities across the bay to Mills Field, now San Francisco International Airport.

  Benton Field was a 100 acre Army airfield, later transferred to the Navy to be occupied by an enlarged Naval Air Station at Alameda.

  One of three airports in Alameda, Alameda Field was a city owned strip near the Oakland-Alameda ship channel on land that would eventually become NAS Alameda.

NAS Sunnyvale

  Built to house the USS Macon, a Navy rigid airship, the hanger at NAS Sunnyvale, shown here under construction, was the largest wood frame building west of the Mississippi. The landing field was named for Admiral Moffett following his death in the crash of the USS Akron, sistership to the Macon, in April 1933.
