PAS Gallery: Bay Area Airports

In the early days of aviation, the San Francisco Bay Area was home to numerous airports. Alameda had three airports, the San Francisco Airport was on an island, and the Oakland Airport was a dirt strip next to the bay.

San Francisco Bay Airdrome

Description:
  The San Francisco Bay Airdrome was located in Alameda near the entrance to the Posey Tube. The airport was home to many air activities including airmail, passenger service, corporate aircraft, and air races. It closed in 1941.

Pan Am Seaplane Lagoon Alameda

Description:
  The seaplane lagoon was part of Benton Field, one of three airports in Alameda. The decommissioned hulls of WW1 destroyers formed a seawall. Crowds would routinely gather to watch the arrival and departure of the Pan Am Clippers.
